Brampton voters have spoken, and defeated Regional Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon was the only incumbent member of council not reelected on Monday night (Oct. 24).

In the city’s only upset on council, Gurpartap Singh Toor was elected as Regional Councillor for Wards 9 and 10. Toor and Dhillon were neck-and-neck for much of the race, separated by a razor-thin margin of roughly 1 per cent as early results came in.

Early results from the City of Brampton show Toor winning with more than 29 pre cent of the vote, narrowly defeating Dhillon.

All other incumbent candidates for Brampton council won their races, including Mayor Patrick Brown, who won with a landslide victory.

Dhillon was was accused by a woman of sexual misconduct and harassment while on a City of Brampton trade mission to Turkey in 2019.

He ran for reelection despite council unanimously calling for Dhillon to resign following a report from the City’s integrity commissioner which stated the victim said “no” 74 times during the alleged harassment.

Dhillon has denied the allegations, which were reported to Peel Regional Police (PRP). All information provided by the complainant was passed on to the Turkish police because the incident happened outside PRP’s jurisdiction.
