Lettuce take a moment to mark the resignation of embattled British Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The U.K.’s Conservative Party leader stepped down on Thursday after a tumultuous 44 days in office, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.

Her resignation was expected, especially after her economic policies triggered turmoil in the financial markets over the past six weeks, and members of her party began calling for her to step down. In fact, U.K. newspaper the Daily Star has been running a YouTube feed featuring a head of lettuce wearing a wig positioned next to a photo of Truss, wondering which one would have the longer shelf life.

The lettuce won.

This led “lettuce” to trend on Twitter on Thursday, alongside “Liz Truss” and former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Google searches for “Liz Truss lettuce” and “Liz Truss cabbage” also spiked in the hours leading up to her resignation.

And the puns were unbeleafable, with even supermarket chain Aldi weighing in by tweeting, “What a great day to be a lettuce.”

Anthony Scaramucci scored perhaps one of the best jokes, however. His own 2017 firing launched what felt like a million memes, as “the Mooch” lasted just 10 days serving as former President Donald Trump’s White House communications director.

Scaramucci tweeted, “Liz Truss lasted 4.1 Scaramuccis,” which collected almost 500 comments, more than 40,000 “likes” and more than 6,000 retweets in about an hour.

Scaramucci later cracked that his short term as the White House comms director was roughy the shelf-life of a carton of milk, while also noting that Truss’s was more like a head of lettuce.

And there was plenty of commentary about the short length of Truss’s time in power across Twitter, as well.

Truss said on Thursday that she will leave office next week, following a leadership election to choose her successor.
