Police say a Brampton double homicide this week was a domestic murder-suicide, calling the killing a heartbreaking case of gender-based violence against women.
Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, members of the Peel Regional Police (PRP) were called to a residence in the area of Red Castle and Kershaw streets for a wellness check.
When officers arrived they found a 23-year-old Brampton man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound outside of a vehicle, and a 23-year old Brampton woman inside the vehicle who had been shot.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the shooting was an isolated incident, saying it’s “a case of domestic violence between two individuals that were in a relationship” and investigators are not looking for any suspects.
PRP Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich called the incident “tragic” and offered condolences to all those affected by this tragedy on behalf of police.
“It is a heartbreaking demonstration of the realities of gender-based violence,” Milinovich said in a statement. “It reinforces the need for our community to continue collective efforts towards ending violence against women.”
